SOLD OUT.

PURPOSE
Purpose to teach how a good deed can bring you a lasting friendship.

A new musical based on the beloved
children’s classic by Bill Peet.

In this musical story about how acts of kindness can lead to lasting friendships, an ant is stranded in the middle of a river clinging precariously to a blade of grass.  A turtle wanders by, and although he could easily rescue the poor ant, he declines to help.  The turtle soon falls into troubles of his own and just as he refused to help the ant, the turtle’s pleas for help are also ignored.
And so begins a cycle of misfortune and misdeeds that is not broken until the kindly elephant arrives providing help to all in need.  But the elephant has a different problem – pride: “Everyone has his troubles except for big me.  I’ll never get into a fix where I need help.”
Sure enough, misfortune befalls the big elephant.  Will anyone remember his good deeds and return the favor?
The most unlikely of heroes proves that one good turn definitely deserves another.

Santa Fe Opera's Elixir of Love at the Spencer Theater in Ruidoso.

Santa Fe Opera
“The Elixir of Love”
Friday, April 3, 2009
10:30 a.m. & 1:00 p.m.

PURPOSE
Purpose to introduce opera to students.

A one-act operetta set in modern
day New Mexico.

Apprentices with the renowned Santa Fe Opera introduce students to the power, beauty and sheer delight of comic opera.  This light-hearted comedy is based on themes of romantic love – and all the anguish it can inspire.  The tale stars Nemorino (a tenor), who is a shy young farmer secretly in love with Adina (soprano), the town’s rodeo queen. The third lead goes to Dr. Dulcamara (baritone) a garish peddler selling questionable remedies.

With Nemorino quietly listening nearby, Adina enters the scene, reading aloud the tale of Tristan and Isolde, in which the two people are bound in eternal love and fiery devotion after consuming a magic potion.  The young rich girl finds the story silly, laughs and leaves.

The timid Nemorino then meets Dr. Dulcamara and asks if he might have the same love potion used by Queen Isolde.  “Of course,” says the quack, who sells the timid boy a “love potion” that is really Gatorade.

Nemorino gulps it down.  Its placebo effect instantly gives the awkward lad new-found confidence and now, instead of pining for Adina, he believes the elixir’s effect will surely make her fall in love with him.

Can it work? Come and see.
