Chuck Mangione
Sponsored in part by a friend of the Spencer.
Sat Aug 23 at 8 p.m.
In an intimate space like the Spencer Theater, the deep melodic resonance of Chuck Mangione’s flugelhorn will whisper in every ear in its original supple and sweeping form.
You’ll find yourself transported from shallow vinyl LP grooves to a live scratchless world.
Chuck Mangione’s music chases clouds away with classics like Feels So Good, Bellavia, Children of Sanchez, Give It All You Got.
A New Yorker who first toured as a trumpeter with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers; Mangione basically gave up the instrument for the flugelhorn (a brassy brother of the trumpet) in the 1970s. He single-handedly made the flugelhorn cross-over jazz/pop/classical cool. He is to the instrument what Tim Weisberg is to the flute and Leo Kottke to the 12-string guitar. He makes more than music with it, he makes magic.
His list of Grammys, Emmys, awards and appearances could fill the rest of this page with dropped names and bullet-pointed statuesque benchmarks.
While a writer tries, there are very few words that sing and it’s hard for paper to carry a tune.
You’ll just have to be here.
Chuck Mangione and his band.
It’s something in the air.
The Spencer summer season finale August 23.
