Taking Vows

EXCHANGING VOWS FOR PHILANTHROPY.

More than two million couples will marry in the United States this year. Statistically, the average bride and groom are almost 30 years old when they marry, and if it is a second marriage, they are even older. They each typically have established a home and are now combining households. Many couples feel they do not want or need traditional wedding gifts and would rather make a statement with their wedding, adding more meaning to their nuptials.

You can make your wedding a broader community celebration as well as an occasion to help others.

Exchanging vows for philanthropy is a trend that is picking up momentum. Couples who have incorporated charitable giving into their wedding events and plans say it helps them to keep their priorities in check.

You can sign up for a charity registry online and create a personalized web page highlighting non-profit groups you have chosen. Your guests are directed to the web page where they can make a contribution online. Donations are then sent to organizations selected by you and your guests.

TO HAVE AND TO GIVE

There are many ways in which you can turn your wedding into a philanthropic opportunity for a non-profit, charitable organization.

• Encourage your guests to make donations in your honor to the Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts or another 501 (c) (3) charitable organization.
• Make donations to the Spencer Theater, or another charity, in honor of your guests instead of handing out wedding favors.
• Donate the leftover food from your wedding reception to a nearby homeless shelter or food pantry.
• Set up a charitable gift registry, listing three or four of your favorite charities to which guests can contribute.
• Use recycled paper for your invitations.
• Display table tent cards (available from the Spencer Theater) at your wedding reception asking guests for a donation.
• Display cards (also available from the Spencer Theater), one at each place setting at your wedding reception, that acknowledge your donation to the charity of your choice in honor of your guests.
