Spencer Theater Class Acts school programming
for the 2007-08 academic year.

Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts offers “Class Acts” performances are strictly for the benefit of school children throughout the region. The programming is designed to enhance arts appreciation and education curriculums, and to introduce students of all ages to professional, live performing arts. Students and chaperones may attend school performances for only $5 per ticket ($7 for the “Little Women” performance). Bus transportation for Lincoln County and Mescalero students is subsidized through a grant from the R.D. & Joan Dale Hubbard Foundation.

Class Acts programming fulfills the Spencer’s core belief that the performing arts are a vital ingredient for a healthy community, an invaluable tool for a civilized society and an indispensable form of education. Through the magical wonder of dance, song and dramatic dialogue, the performing arts enhance all realms of curriculum in a most aesthetic manner, heightening learning as well as appreciation for living.

Teacher study guides, when available, are expected to be available online for most of the performances.

Frog & Toad

To teach life lessons in appreciating friendship and rejoicing in differing attributes of each individual.

Waking from hibernation in the spring, they proceed to plant gardens, swim, rake leaves and go sledding, learning life lessons along the way, including a most important one about friendship and rejoicing in the attributes that make each of us different and special.

A hit on Broadway, A Year With Frog and Toad was nominated for 3 Tony Awards© - including Best Musical. Now, for the first time, an all-new production will tour across North America. Arnold Lobel’s beloved characters hop from the page to the stage. The stage musical remains true to the spirit of the original stories as it follows two great friends, the cheerful and popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad through four fun-filled seasons.

This wonderful narrative has been brought to life as an exhilarating musical and filled with laughter, tears, and a lifting of the spirit. Don’t miss this “richly sentimental favorite with appeal after appeal.”

This performance is a special one-hour presentation of the touring Broadway production.

A cutting-edge leader in contemporary American dance, the Parsons Dance has thrilled audiences on six continents since first taking form in 1987. Buzzing with virtuosity and kinetic energy, the nine member company dances with fantastic pizzazz and humor. Under the direction of David Parsons, one of the most prominent and skilled modern dancers of his generation, the company performs theatrical abstracts of social and universal themes, moving with an exuberance that makes spirits soar.

The company regularly pushes the boundaries of modern dance, exploring new territories and creating new means of movement expression.

Parsons Dance is in great demand internationally and conducts extensive tours of the United States each year.

This is a one hour special student performance by the group.

Giant Peach

James and the Giant Peach

To demonstrate the power of imagination and hope.

James Trotter’s life was great until a rhinoceros came and changed everything! Suddenly he was an orphan sent to live with his mean Aunt Spiker and cruel Aunt Sponge. One day while working in the garden, a mysterious man gives James a gift that changes his life again and it involves a magical peach. James and the Giant Peach is a tale of friendship, love, sadness and triumph.

Sign Stage on Tour is a specialist in Sign Language Theatre where deaf and hearing actors perform together on stage. Whenever a character speaks, the character speaking uses sign language but you’ll always hear the voice too. Visually, the stage is filled with the movement of hands and bodies yet every word is spoken to make sure all audience members, both deaf and hearing, don’t miss a thing. It’s a magical blend of language.

Deaf Theatre Adaption by William Morgan based on the book by Roald Dahl.
